Aims: Because of its arid and semi-arid climate, Iran faces high evaporation rates from open water sources, causing significant annual water loss. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of a silica evaporation reducer on a semi-industrial scale and to investigate its quantitative and qualitative effects on surface water resources.
Methodology: The study was conducted from March 2024 to June 2025 in the Shamil and Nian Dam areas of Hormozgan province, in two experimental ponds: one control pond and one containing a silica evaporation reducer. The evaporation rate was measured over a three-month period using two manual and digital methods. To evaluate the substance's effect on water quality, we conducted periodic sampling and measured parameters.
Findings: The evaporation reduction rate in the control pond (without an evaporation-reducing agent) was 62.82cm, and in the pond with the silica evaporation-reducing agent, it was 53.48cm. The evaporation-reducing agent had no effect on water quality and met the drinking water standard.
Conclusion: The silica evaporation-reducing agent reduces the evaporation rate by 15%. Using the silica evaporation-reducing agent does not affect water quality.
