Aims & Backgrounds: This study aimed to investigate and identify the role and importance of biodiversity in the Touran Biosphere Reserve in the development of ecotourism.
Methodology: This research is a survey-analysis. Through the registration of land points with a GPS device and the use of a geographic information system, a map of habitats of animal species in the study area was prepared and collected. The study used Landsat 7 satellite data (ETM) (updated in 2010). For this purpose, ArcGIS software, Version9.2 was used. A modified questionnaire was used to measure user votes and prioritize the importance of natural attractions related to biodiversity. The sampling method was cluster random sampling with 764 samples. Exploratory factor analysis was used to analyze the data.
Findings: The southern and eastern parts of the study area are composed of desert land use (57%). Large parts of the region (40%) are covered by rangelands and plains, mainly the middle part. There are also 3 mountains (3%) in the northern. 16 of the biodiversity is on the list of protected species. From the tourists' point of view, the most important factors related to wildlife are hunting and hunting attractions, sport related attractions, recreational attractions, education and research attractions and economics attractions, respectively. In the meanwhile, the highest weight was attributed to gun hunting (0.75) followed by equestrian-related attractions (0.63) and animal-watching attractions (0.59), with the lowest weight being attractions. Monetization (0.14) as well as drawing attractions (0.18).
Conclusion: The study area has a high potential for ecotourism, but due to the high tendency of tourists to some violations and the low awareness of tourists and the local community about the consequences of environmental crimes, the need to apply management principles including education, planning and environmental criminal law. It is already felt.
