Abstract   (4512 Views)

From the beginning of creation until now, humans have been subject to various kinds of natural and man driven threats, and have suffered different kinds of damages. Iran, due to its particular natural context on one hand and being located on an unsafe strategic space on the other hand has been subject to several basic natural and man driven threats. Among 40 kinds of known natural disasters in the world, more than 30 cases happen in Iran. Regarding man driven threats, military attacks and terrorist acts are also considered as important threats, which can endanger urban infrastructures in different sections of water, electricity, gas, fuel, transportation, etc. This study seeks to analyze and assess military and terrorist attacks on transportation infrastructures using a descriptive and analytical method as well as library research, emphasizing on metropolitan Iran. The results of research show that in spite of importance of vital infrastructures in metropolises in order for ordinary life to continue, extreme daily need of citizens and different urban sections to these infrastructures, and high level of dependency of industrial and meta industrial societies to vital infrastructures such as transportation networks, elements and components of this infrastructure are very vulnerable against military and terrorist attacks. Especially, considering that no military and security precautions have been planned and launched to defend these infrastructures from military and terrorist aggressions.
